Pony trekking is available in nearby Hamsterley Forest and a nostalgic steam train ride on the Weardale Railway offers an ideal way to enjoy the local landscape (in season).
The historic city of Durham, only 17 miles away, is well worth visiting for its Norman castle, magnificent cathedral and river boat trips, whilst in happy contrast, cosmopolitan Newcastle for excellent shopping and fascinating architecture is a 24 mile drive. Beamish Living History Museum, Barnard Castle and Kilhope Lead Mining Centre are among the attractions close by, and Hadrian's Wall with its Roman forts and spectacular views of the Northumberland moors is within an hour's drive.
